The dachshund was originally bred in Germany for hunting badgers,
hence the name "dachs" meaning badger and "hund" meaning
dog. The dog was bred mainly for going into burrows and forcing out badgers.
Not much human assistance can be given to a dog which is fighting a badger
underneath the ground. Natural selection endowed survivors with a self
reliant personality, a larger chest for optimum oxygen usage, a good armament
of teeth, a elongated muscular body with shorter legs and strong neck,
and an amazing sense of smell. Modern dachshunds have inherited these traits
and by breeding down the size we have ended up with a tenacious little
hunter for small game.

HAWK DAWG KENNELS was started in
the early spring of 1999 with the purchase of our first mini-dachshund,
FC BLACKHAWK KANSAS BULLET MW known as BULLET. She has proved to
be an exceptional hunting dog with outstanding stamina in the field, fantastic
hole work, and good training ability. She earned her AKC Field Trial Championship
at the age of 18 months by winning "Absolute" in the meet. Her daughter,
FC HAWK DAWG WILD THANG MW, proved to be equally as good and earned her
Field Trial Championship at the tender age of 6 months.. BULLET
and her offspring are the backbone of our breeding program.
We made the decision to limit our program mainly to wirehairs. This
was mainly because of living in the cold North of Michigan. A good wire
coat is waterproof and offers a greater degree of protection than the smooth.
We do not like to pick briars out of long hair coats, so the decision was
an easy one to make. We also have to admit that we just like the looks
of the wirehair! We will on occasion have a smooth to offer.
Our breeding goals are to maintain hunting conformation, hunting ability,
coat quality, and loving disposition of our dogs. We strive to maintain
optimum size and performance of our dogs. We stand behind our dogs 100
percent and guarantee their quality.

Our philosophy is simple, a dog is most happy doing what it is made
for. Our breeding is mainly to produce wirehair hunting dachshunds. This
is the reason that we work all our dogs and the reason we prefer to sell
our dogs to hunters, especially falconers. It didn't take the falconry
community long to see the advantages and fun of joining bird and dachshund
in the hunt. This hunting partnership is perhaps the ultimate in the sport
and quite a sight to behold!
We may, on occasion, make exceptions to this preference, however, we
still would prefer that our dogs live in active environments.
We also place emphasis on producing dogs with loving dispositions.
This is why we spend the time working with all the pups in a family environment.
After all, they have to fit into a human family and form relationships
with everyone in that family.
